Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., warned Sunday an impeachment of President Donald Trump would “dumb down and destroy” the United States.
In an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union,” Paul railed at the process as akin to nations that overthrow their leaders because of political differences.
“I think it is a sad day because I hope it doesn't evolve” into situations in “different parts of Latin America” that “impeach or throw presidents into jail because we don't like their politics.”
“I think that will dumb down and destroy the county,” Paul declared.
According to Paul, the “heart of” the impeachment effort is “disagreement over policy and… an extension of politics.”
“This isn't about the constitution or the president breaking the constitution,” he said. “Foreign aid has always contingent upon behavior and the money [Congress] gave him to give to Ukraine, it said in the law he has to certify they are less prone to corruption. So he was instructed by Congress to do what he asked to be done.”
Paul also demanded troops be brought home from Afghanistan.
“If our generals or colonels are admitting that there is no mission and we cannot make Afghanistan into an American democracy then we need to come home. We've needed to come home for more than a decade.”
