Sen. Paul: Trump's 'Direct' Methods Not Call for Impeachment

Sen. Rand Paul Thursday questioned if President Donald Trump should be impeached because of his "direct" methods of approaching situations, such as with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in connection with Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

He also Thursday told "CBS This Morning" that he approves of Trump's decision to remove U.S. troops from Syria before Turkey's strike in the country's northern region.

"Well the thing is, now we're getting down to whether or not it's personality and how he interacted in a phone call," the Kentucky Republican said about the Ukraine-Biden controversy,  after he was asked if it was wrong for Trump to ask Ukraine's president for a "favor" concerning the Bidens. "Do you impeach people because he has a more direct way of approaching?"

"Is it wrong, or isn't it?" asked show co-host Anthony Mason.

"What I would say is that aid that we give to other countries should be contingent upon behavior. And whether or not we should have Ukraine trying to eradicate corruption, yes."

"This was specifically about Mr. Biden," Mason said.

"Ask the American people do you think $50,000 a month that Hunter Biden was getting might have been corrupt?" Paul said.

In addition, Paul defended Trump's call to pull U.S. troops from Syria, even while other Republicans have slammed the president's decision as one that threatens to harm Kurdish allies and to restore power to ISIS.

"What kind of war do you go to with 50 soldiers?" Paul said, noting that very few troops had remained in Northern Syria, adding that he thinks Trump's move is a "smart thing to do."

The senator said he hasn't spoken with Trump since the troop withdrawal was announced earlier this week.
