Sen. Paul: Health Bill Collapse a 'Victory' for Allowing 'Clean Repeal'

By    |   Wednesday, 19 Jul 2017 10:17 AM

The failure of the GOP healthcare bill in the Senate is a "victory" for conservatives by opening the door to a "clean repeal," Sen. Rand Paul said on "Good Morning America" on Wednesday.

"What I'm calling a victory is not the defeat of the plan. What I'm calling the victory is that we will get to vote on a clean repeal," said Paul, R-Ky., one of the bill's earliest opponents.

President Donald Trump made a similar call for a repeal of Obamacare, suggesting a "clean slate" on Monday.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., announced late Monday night that "in the coming days, the Senate will vote to take up the House bill with the first amendment in order being what a majority of the Senate already supported in 2015 and that was vetoed by then-President Obama: a repeal of Obamacare with a two-year delay to provide for a state transition period to a patient-centered health care system that gives Americans access to quality, affordable care."

In his interview, Paul stated that despite his opposition to the bill passed in the House and the one proposed in the Senate, he will support a "clean repeal" without a replacement plan.

"I'm in favor of and will vote to go to the clean repeal that is being proposed now," he said. "I still favor a replacement. ... But what we discovered is Republicans don't agree on replacement."
