Sen. Rand Paul, who opposed an earlier Senate effort to replace Obamacare, is praising President Donald Trump for planning to take executive action to repeal key parts of the bill and expand insurance options.

Paul, an ophthalmologist, opposed the Senate's latest effort to replace Obamacare, a measured sponsored by Republicans Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. He criticized the bill for failing to repeal Obamacare.

Trump tweeted Monday that he will use the "power of the pen" to fix healthcare.

He is expected to expand insurance options for Americans who want to buy plans with less coverage than mandated under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the formal name of Obamacare.

Trump's changes also are expected to include rules to allow people to purchase healthcare through "association health plans," similar to ones available to employees of large companies.
