House Speaker Paul Ryan may now be more "liberated" in dealing with President Donald Trump now that he's announced he's leaving Congress, says Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi.

"Dealing with President Trump is no walk in the park. I don't think it's any secret he and the president don't necessarily see eye to eye on a variety of issues," Krishnamoorthi, who represents Illinois's 8th congressional district, told WGN Radio on Sunday.

"That being said, I was a little disappointed that he hasn't been more forceful in pushing back on the president with regard to a variety of issues, and he's kind of ceded some of our legislative prerogative in Congress to the president.

"I'm hoping that maybe now that he's somewhat liberated, he'll do that in the remaining months."

Krishnamoorthi said he believes Ryan is being "sincere" when he says when he was "sincere" in saying he was not running for re-election in Wisconsin in order to spend more time with his family.

But, added Krishnamoorthi, Ryan "probably sees the likelihood of him serving as the next speaker going down with each passing day."

Last Wednesday, Ryan confirmed he will not seek re-election in November, telling a press conference that he has decided to set new priorities in his life and with his family.

"What I realize is if I'm here for one more term, my kids will only have ever known me as a weekend dad," Ryan said. "I just can't let that happen. So I will be setting new priorities in my life, but I will also be leaving incredibly proud of what we've accomplished."

One subject Ryan is already disagreeing with Trump on is his opinion of ex-FBI director James Comey, whom the president fired last May and has called a "slime ball."

On NBC News's "Meet the Press," Ryan suggested that he believes Comey to be a man of integrity.
