The White House believes it's a good thing the Department of Justice has recovered five months of missing text messages delivered between FBI agent Peter Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page, but still believes the fact they went missing to be a major issue, Principal Deputy White House Press Secretary Raj Shah said Thursday afternoon.

"We think these text messages are very significant," Shah told Fox News' "Outnumbered Overtime" host Harris Faulkner. "The fact that they went missing is a really big problem."

The White House thinks the latest development is a good one, but "we want to make sure that as many message are recovered as possible and that the truth about political bias of the highest ranks of the FBI is made available to the public," said Shah.

Strzok was a key investigator in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, but the White House has "long maintained [that] was a witch hunt," said Shah.

"There is no collusion, no obstruction, no evidence of wrongdoing, and now this individual has been removed from the case for political bias," said Shah. "Thousands of text messages missing is a huge problem. This goes to a wider problem we've been talking about, political malfeasance and bias in the highest ranks of the FBI and Department of Justice."

Shah said Trump nominated FBI Director Christopher Wray to "clean it up and move us forward with an FBI that's above political bias and questioning."

Meanwhile, Trump said Wednesday he's looking forward to sitting down with Mueller, and Shah said he doesn't consider that to be inconsistent with other statements he's made in the past.

"This investigation is one in which they spent nearly a year, millions of taxpayer dollars, and they found no collusion, no obstruction, no evidence of wrongdoing, and the president has been fully cooperating," said Shah. "The president has said he is willing to talk to the special counsel, he's going to consult with his attorneys about how that works, but the president has nothing to hide, he's done nothing wrong and he wants to put this issue behind him."
