The chief rabbi of the the Western Wall rejected a request by Vice President Mike Pence to hold a press conference at the holy site during his upcoming trip, The Times of Israel reports.

U.S. officials requested Pence be allowed to speak near the site, according to Israeli media, but Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz turned them down, saying it wouldn't be appropriate at a religious site. The Western Wall is the only remnant of the walls of the Second Jewish Temple begun by Herod the Great in Jerusalem.

Rabinowitz said privately, however, that he feared violence if Pence were allowed to speak, since it could be seen as a political statement just two weeks after President Donald Trump announced the United States recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a local television station reported.

Pence's office has since said his trip will now be delayed until January so Pence can be on hand for the vote on the Republican tax plan.

The Western Wall lies in East Jerusalem, which was captured by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War. It, and the rest of the Old City, is a bone of contention between Israelis and Palestinians, who both lay claim to it in negotiations over a future Palestinian State.

Even with rejection of the news conference, Pence still had been set to visit the Western Wall during his trip where he was to have lit a menorah for Hannukah.
