Fifty percent of Americans say former President Barack Obama is more responsible for the current state of the American economy, compared to only 37 percent who say it is more due to President Donald Trump, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.

Thirteen percent said they did not know or refused to answer.

However, although this result has been about the same for the past half year, the general trend has been for more people to start giving credit to Trump as time passes.

Back in March, 67 percent credited Obama and only 19 percent Trump, which changed by May to 58 percent saying the state of the economy is due more to Obama and 29 percent crediting Trump.

Since his November 2016 electoral victory, Trump has consistently claimed exclusive credit for the economy, frequently pointing to record highs in the Dow Jones industrial average and falling unemployment rates as proof that enthusiasm over his policies has spurred the economy, according to The Hill.

Other results of the Quinnipiac University survey indicate:

  • While 59 percent of Democrats say Obama is more responsible for the state of the economy and 58 percent of Republicans say it is due to Trump, Independents favor crediting Obama over Trump by a margin of 51 percent to 33 percent.
  • When respondents were asked to describe their personal financial situation these days, 13 percent said excellent, 60 percent said good, 17 percent answered not so good and 8 percent poor. Those percentage have remained relatively stable in surveys since April.

The poll surveyed 1,577 voters across the United States between Nov. 7-13. It has a margin of error of three percentage points.
