Almost two-thirds of Americans agree with the Supreme Court's opinion in landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade, a Quinnipiac University national poll reported.

Among voters overall, 63 percent agree with the legalization of abortion and 31 percent disagree.

Breaking down the results between men and women, a four-point gap exists.

  • 61 percent of men support Roe v. Wade while 32 percent do not.
  • 65 percent of women support Roe v. Wade while 30 percent do not.

The only group sub-group of the overall vote that disagrees with abortion is Republicans; all other breakdowns by party, gender, education, age, and racial group agree with it, the poll report said.

Quinnipiac surveyed 1,020 voters around the U.S. with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points. Live interviewers called landlines and cell phones, the poll report said.

Evangelical leaders are downplaying the possibility of a reversal of the case.

"What people don't understand is that if you overturn Roe v. Wade, all that does is give the states the right to decide whether abortion is legal or illegal," Jerry Falwell Jr. said.
