President Donald Trump put out a bold challenge for progressive critics of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., in the Democratic Party – the four "women of color," according Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.:

Go back to the "totally broken and crime infested places from which they came" before you preach on how the United States – "the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth" – should be run.

President Trump tweeted:

"So interesting to see 'Progressive' Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly......"

"....and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don't they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how...."

"....it is done. These places need your help badly, you can't leave fast enough. I'm sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!"

The tweets are aimed at: Rep. Ocasio-Cortez (Puerto Rican descent); Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. (Somali-Yemeni descent); Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass. (African-American born in Chicago); and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich. (Palestinian-American).

Only Omar, from Somalia, is foreign-born. The first Somali native elected to Congress and one of its first Muslim women, Omar was born in Somalia but spent much of her childhood in a Kenyan refugee camp as civil war tore apart her home country.

She immigrated to the United States at age 12, teaching herself English by watching American TV and eventually settling with her family in Minneapolis.

Ocasio-Cortez, who is of Puerto Rican descent, was born in the Bronx, New York, and raised in suburban Westchester County.

Pressley, the first black woman elected to the House from Massachusetts, was born in Cincinnati.

Tlaib was born in Detroit.

AOC has challenged Speaker Pelosi for being dismissive of the first-term congresswomen as "women of color," a charge even President Trump has rebuked, saying Pelosi "is not a racist."

Pelosi called Trump's tweets “xenophobic comments meant to divide our nation,” and Democratic Representative Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico decried “a racist tweet from a racist president.”

Tlaib was blunt: “Want a response to a lawless & complete failure of a President?”’ she tweeted. “He is the crisis. His dangerous ideology is the crisis.”

Democratic presidential hopefuls also weighed in. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said that “unfortunately, there’s an American tradition of telling people to go back to where they came from” and that Trump was trying to “gin up his base” by keeping Americans divided.

“You don’t expect to hear it from the president of the United States,” de Blasio said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.

Lujan, assistant Speaker and a member of the Hispanic Caucus in the House, became emotional on “Fox News Sunday” when shown Trump’s tweet.

“That is a racist tweet. Telling people to go back where they came from? I think that’s wrong,” he said.

"Mr. President, the country I 'come from,' and the country we all swear to, is the United States," Ocasio-Cortez, like Trump a native of New York City, responded on Twitter. "You are angry because you can't conceive of an America that includes us. You rely on a frightened America for your plunder."

"Do I fit into the President's category?" U.S. Senator Dick Durbin on Illinois, said on CBS's "Face the Nation," mentioning his family's Lithuanian heritage.

"Thanks goodness," he said of Omar's journey from refugee to one of only two Muslim women elected to Congress, along with Tlaib, a native of Detroit. "That is what America holds as a dream. The president should not diminish it."
