The May 3 Republican primary in Indiana could play a key role in whether or not Donald Trump secures the nomination before this summer — and the latest polls say the winner-take-all primary will be awfully close.

There have not been any results of public polls from the state released, but Politico references three private surveys that suggest the race between Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cuz is tight.

Two of the polls show the pair is statistically tied, while the third shows Trump leading Cruz.

These results, which should be taken with a grain of salt because they are from private surveys, underscore that the Indiana primary may be one of the most pivotal of the remaining primaries.

"Indiana is facing a unique moment in history: the opportunity to stop Donald Trump," Club for Growth Action president David McIntosh said Thursday.

"After success with our ads in Wisconsin, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Utah, CFG Action is about to blanket the Hoosier State with a simple message: To stop Trump, vote Cruz. There is now no state more important than Indiana for electing Cruz and keeping Trump from reaching 1,237."

The group, which has endorsed Cruz in the presidential race, said it will spend roughly $1.5 million on ads in Indiana to bolster support for the Texan.

Cruz campaigned in Indiana Thursday and met with Gov. Mike Pence, who has yet to publicly endorse anyone for president. Trump met with Pence Wednesday.
