President-elect Donald Trump will reportedly have a private dinner Tuesday with Mitt Romney amid a raucous public spectacle over the selection of his secretary of state.

Trump transition spokesman Jason Miller said the new meeting will give the president-elect more time with the former Massachusetts governor, who was bitterly critical of Trump during the campaign, The Hill reported.

"The president-elect is really taking these meetings very seriously," Miller said on a conference call, The Hill reported. "He wants to make sure that he's making the absolute best decision for all of the different positions where folks may be joining the administration.

"I think he wants to make sure that he's absolutely sure on all of these. And also, too, I think with the case of Gov. Romney, the two quite frankly haven't spent that much time together."

According to Politico, which first reported the private dinner, the consideration of Romney as the nation's top diplomat has split the president-elect's team.

Over the weekend, senior adviser Kellyanne Conway continued her days-long attack on Romney.

Also under consideration is former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former CIA director David Petraeus, whom he described as "very impressive" after a meeting Monday, as well as Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker of Tennessee.

According to The Hill, Trump also plans to meet Tuesday with House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul of Texas, who wants to be secretary of Homeland Security, as well as early Trump supporter Pennsylvania Rep. Lou Barletta and frequent Trump surrogate Tennessee Rep. Marsha Blackburn.
