Tony Blair: Trump Must Offer Clarity, Consistency to UN

President Donald Trump must offer an address to the United Nations that will show clarity and consistency of the American approach to world affairs, former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair said Monday.

"People want always the same thing from American and from its president," Blair told CNN. "They want to know that America's strong enough to stand with its allies and to stand up to its enemies. I think what people will be looking for is an idea of what are the principles that are going to guide American policy, and is there clarity and consistency around those."

Blair said he believes there is still a mixture of curiosity and anxiety surrounding Trump, "but this is not totally unnatural when you get a new president coming in."

"I do think this is a very important moment," he said. "There are so many challenging issues in the world today and North Korea, but people in Europe want to know, is this alliance still strong? People in the Middle East want to know where America stands on the issues in the Middle East today."

People will also be looking for evidence that America remains the most powerful country in the world, Blair said.

Meanwhile, there have been several terror attacks in London this year, and Blair said the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change is tracking day-by-day terrorist incidents around the world.

"There's literally not a corner of the world, perhaps except for South America, where this isn't a daily concern," Blair said. "Obviously you take security measures to defeat those planning violence but I think the deeper question is how do you defeat the ideology of this radical islamic idea."

The answer, he said, is to weed out elements that are promoting terrorism, whether on the Internet or with people who are radicalizing others.

"I think this needs to be done on a far bigger scale than we have at the moment," said Blair.

The former prime minister also commented on Trump's tweet following the latest terror attack in London, saying he agrees with current Prime Minister Theresa May it is not helpful to speculate when such events happen.
