President Donald Trump bragged about a survey in a tweet on Sunday that he said has the Republicans in the lead for a generic congressional ballot, even though the actual poll he cited has the Democrats ahead.

The McLaughlin and Associates survey he cited has the Democrats leading 45 percent to 42 percent in February, with 13 percent undecided.

The McLaughlin poll also does not show a big gain for the GOP over the last four weeks, as Trump claimed, as the Democratic lead was the same three percentage points in January and was actually only one percentage point in December.

Even if the Democrats' largest advantage in the McLaughlin polls is taken into account, at 46 percent to 40 percent in November, the Republican gains are difficult to characterize as "big."

Most other polling also shows Democrats ahead in a generic congressional poll, according to The Hill.

A Real Clear Politics average has Democrats leading by 6.9 percentage points in February. However, that advantage is significantly lower than the 13-percentage-point advantage the Democrats held in the same survey in December, which would support part of Trump's claim.

Additional support for the president's claim comes from a Politico-Morning Consult poll released this past Wednesday, which shows that Republicans have the advantage in the congressional generic poll, with the GOP at 39 percent and Democrats at 38 percent, along with 23 percent undecided.

That survey also marked a significant Republican improvement, as the GOP was behind by as many as 10 percentage points in a Politico-Morning Consult survey in November.
