President Donald Trump, highly frustrated with White House chief of staff John Kelly, has openly talked with advisers about potential replacements, NBC News is reporting.

The report comes amid a tumultuous few days and added scrutiny for Trump and the White House, especially Kelly, over their handling of staff secretary Rob Porter's alleged spousal abuse of both ex-wives.

It has become a "what did you know and when did you know it" scenario for Kelly, who reportedly had known for four months about the allegations against Porter, who resigned Wednesday.

Compounding Trump's frustration level, NBC reports, is that Kelly had to walk back glowing statements about Porter, bad optics given the allegations against him.

According to both NBC and The New York Times, Trump has openly asked advisers their opinion of Mick Mulvaney for chief of staff. Mulvaney is currently Trump's dual director at Office of Management and Budget and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Further, the Times reported that Trump has called former chief of staff Reince Priebus to kvetch about Kelly.

The Porter snafu is another chink in the armor for Kelly, who also brought negative attention to the White House by asserting that some illegal immigrants were "too lazy" to fill out paperwork to qualify for legal status.

He also overstepped his bounds in December, telling Latino Democratic lawmakers that Trump's position on immigration had evolved since the campaign.

Despite all of that, NBC reports that Trump will likely ultimately do nothing with Kelly, likening his frustration in the moment with that of Rex Tillerson and Jeff Sessions, both of whom weathered their storms with Trump and remain on the job.

"I dont think he wants to fire anybody because there's too much drama," a staffer told NBC.
