Democrats "are doing nothing to fix" the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and they don't want to, President Donald Trump declared in a pair of tweets Saturday.
In his first message, the president posted that "the Democrats are all talk and no action. They are doing nothing to fix DACA. Great opportunity missed. Too bad!"
About an hour later, the president returned to Twitter, posting that he does not "believe the Democrats really want to see a deal on DACA. They are all talk and no action. This is the time but, day by day, they are blowing the one great opportunity they have. Too bad!"
This week, bipartisan congressional leaders introduced a deal on DACA that provided $1.6 billion for border security, reformed family-based legislation and codified protections for "dreamers," or DACA recipients, but Trump called the deal a "big step backwards."
On Friday, Trump attacked the deal through his Twitter account, saying it did not adequately fund his call for a wall along the southern border, and that it made the issues of chain migration and the lottery VISA system worse.
"USA would be forced to take large numbers of people from high crime," Trump tweeted.
He also said he wants a DACA deal to include a merit-based system of immigration and "people who will help take our country to the next level."
Trump also complained on Friday that Democrats are not "interested in life and safety" and that has made DACA take "a big step backwards."
"The Dems will threaten 'shutdown,' but what they are really doing is shutting down our military, at a time we need it most," he said.
