A new poll released Tuesday shows Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton leading GOP presumptive nominee Donald Trump by 4 points nationally – a race that's become more competitive race than anticipated.

The survey from the Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling breaks down like this:
  • Clinton: 42
  • Trump: 38
  • Libertarian Gary Johnson: 4 percent
  • Green Party candidate Jill Stein: 2 percent
In a match-up between just the two leaders, the results show:
  • Clinton: 47 percent
  • Trump: 41 percent
"Hillary Clinton certainly is favored to win the presidential race this fall, but it might not be the giant blowout it’s been made out to be in some quarters," Dean Debnam, president of PPP, tells the Washington Times.

"Donald Trump has quickly gotten most rank-and-file Republican voters behind him and that has him positioned as a modest underdog for the general rather than a massive one."

Clinton leads Trump 78-9 among Democrats in the full field, while Trump leads Clinton 78-7 among Republicans, the survey finds.

"Although much has been made of disunity in the GOP, it is actually just as unified behind Trump as the Democrats are behind Clinton," the survey analysis states, with 72 percent of Republicans saying they're comfortable with Trump as their nominee, compared with 21 percent who aren't.

Among Democrats, 75 percent say they're comfortable with Clinton as their nominee, while 21 percent say they would not be.

Clinton's primary rival Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders leads Trump by 10 points, 47 percent to 37 percent, with Johnson at 3 percent and Stein at 1 percent, the survey shows. Sanders leads Trump, however, by 11 points 50 percent to 39 percent, in a head-to-head match-up.

Sixty-three percent of Democrats said they'd be comfortable with Sanders as the party’s nominee, compared to 30 percent who said they would not be.
