Pompeo: US-China Trade Talks Still Open Despite Virus Impasse

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Thursday said trade talks are still planned with China, despite the impasse over the Trump administration's push for the Chinese Communist Party to release the information that is required to be shared under international health regulations about the origins of the coronavirus pandemic that has killed hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.

"We have an obligation to be truthful for the American people," Pompeo said on CNBC's "Squawk Box." "This is what democracies do. We're not raising the rhetoric. We're simply trying to protect the world from a global pandemic by sharing what we know."

Meanwhile, the United States is prepared to continue with trade talks in "good faith," but will be based on decisions the Chinese want to make to engage in the world, including protecting property rights.

"If they choose a path where they continue to operate the way they've operated for the last 25 years, President Trump's just going to say, 'No, that doesn't work for the American people and the American worker and we're going to head down a different path,'" said Pompeo.

The Chinese government, he added, says it wants to be cooperative, so it should "do the right thing" and share the information that it's required to share.

President Donald Trump is thinking "in multiple ways" about the challenges of dealing with China concerning not only the coronavirus, but with trade deals, fairness, and intellectual property theft, among other issues, said Pompeo, adding that the Chinese lack of transparency on the virus is "a symptom" of an authoritarian regime.

"We know for sure that the virus originated in Wuhan, China, and the Chinese Communist Party covered this up," said Pompeo. "We are working diligently today to get the Chinese Communist Party to help us identify patient zero, where this began, how this came to be ... the world's epidemiologists don't know the origins of this virus. We have to figure out how to get therapeutics, vaccines to the market, and all of the things that we need that only the Chinese Communist Party has in its possession."
