Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the State Department will “honor” the promise to comply with the transition to the Joe Biden administration.
His comments came in an interview with Fox News conducted earlier in the week and aired on Thursday.
On Nov. 10, he had voiced confidence that once every “legal” vote was counted, it would lead to a “second Trump administration.”
But during the Fox News interview, he referred to the General Services Administration’s decision on Monday to inform Biden that his efforts to prepare for transition could officially begin.
Pompeo said: “I remember when I was the incoming guy at the Central Intelligence Agency. The United States has one secretary of state at a time, but we know right-seat/left-seat. We’ll have one secretary of state and one president for the duration. Those things that are required that the president has directed us to do in compliance with the decision that the GSA made, we'll do all of those things."
"It's a legal requirement, and we'll always honor that promise," Pompeo said.
