New polls show Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump in four battleground states, according to NBC News, which conducted the polls with The Wall Street Journal and the Marist Institute for Public Opinion.
  • In Florida, which President Barack Obama won in 2008 and again in 2012, Clinton has a seven-point advantage over Trump, 44 percent to 37 percent.
  • Clinton is leading in Colorado, which Obama also carried twice, by eight points, 43 percent to 35 percent, while 21 percent said neither, other, or undecided.
  • Clinton leads in North Carolina, 44 percent to 38 percent, which went to GOP candidate Mitt Romney in 2012, and to Obama in 2008.
  • Virginia is strongest for Clinton, where she’s nine points up at 44 percent to 35 percent. The state was carried by Obama in the last two elections.

"With 66 electoral votes at stake in these four states, Donald Trump is playing catch-up against Hillary Clinton," Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist institute, told NBC.

In other findings, the poll shows:
  • Both candidates are more disliked than liked. In Florida, North Carolina and Virginia, Clinton polls at 37 percent favorable, 58 percent unfavorable. In Colorado, she’s less popular with 34 percent favorable, 62 percent unfavorable.
  • Trump fares even worse. The New York billionaire is most liked in Florida, 34 percent favorable to 61 percent unfavorable. In North Carolina he’s at 31 percent favorable, 61 percent unfavorable. Virginia 29 percent favorable, 65 percent unfavorable. Colorado respondents like Trump the least and dislike him the most at 27 percent favorable, 67 percent unfavorable.

When third-party candidates Gary Johnson and Jill Stein were added to the poll, the race remained essentially unaltered.
  • Clinton remains in the lead in each state, with Trump not far behind.
  • Colorado supports Clinton 39 percent to Trump’s 33 percent, Libertarian Johnson got 13 percent and the Green Party’s Stein received support from 4 percent.
  • In Florida, Clinton gets 41 percent of the respondents, Trump 36 percent, Johnson 7 percent, and Stein 4 percent.
  • In North Carolina has Clinton at 42 percent, Trump 36 percent, Johnson 7 percent, and Stein 2 percent.
  • And in Virginia, Clinton gets 41 percent, Trump 34 percent, Johnson 10 percent, and Stein 2 percent.
Despite leading, Clinton isn’t holding the same advantage she had earlier in the race, which is causing Democrats some worry.

"Some people were freaked out, they were looking down at the polls on Real Clear Politics and asking why it was so close," said a Democratic senator to The Hill, speaking about a private meeting in the Capitol on Thursday.

The NBC/Journal/Marist state polls were conducted between July 5-11, with registered voters numbering 794 in Colorado, 871 in Florida, 907 in North Carolina, and 876 in Virginia, with a margin of error of about +/- 3.3 percent in each.
