Forty-five percent of voters trust fired FBI Director James Comey more to tell the truth, compared to 32 who put their faith in President Donald Trump, a new Politico/Morning Consult poll revealed.
Here are the highlights from the survey:
- 43 percent of those polled said Comey's testimony in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee hurt the president, compared to 23 percent who said it helped Trump.
- 36 percent of Republicans said Comey's testimony helped Trump, compared to 28 percent who said it hurt him.
- 58 percent of Democrats said Comey's testimony hurt the president, while 16 percent said it helped him.
- 44 percent said it was inappropriate for Trump to fire Comey, compared to 37 percent who said it was proper.
- 54 percent said it was inappropriate for Comey to ask a friend to share with a reporter a memo he had composed after meeting with Trump, while 26 percent said it was appropriate.
"The Political/Morning Consult poll shows 45 percent of registered voters approve of the job Trump is doing as president — virtually unchanged from 44 percent last week," Steve Shepard wrote for the website.
"Exactly half of voters disapprove of Trump's job performance.
"Trump's base is sticking with him: 81 percent of GOP voters approve of his job performance. But his approval rating is far lower among Democrats (16 percent) and independents (39 percent)."
The poll surveyed 1,990 registered voters between June 8-12. The margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
