Forty-one percent of voters favor Donald Trump meeting with Kim Jong Un without any preconditions, while 36 percent want the president to first secure concessions from North Korea's leader regarding nuclear weapons, a new Politico/Morning Consult poll reveals.

Here are other highlights from the survey:

  • 24 percent say they have "a lot" of trust in Trump to handle threats posed by North Korea; 21 percent have "some" confidence; 16 percent don't have much confidence and 31 percent have "no confidence at all."
  • 75 percent favor diplomatic efforts in dealing with North Korea; 63 percent support imposing additional sanctions against the country; 61 percent back sanctions against nations that trade with the Kim regime.
  • 32 percent support airstrikes against North Korea, compared to 48 percent who oppose them.

"Democrats and Republicans have drastically different viewpoints on whether President Trump will be able to handle threats posed by North Korea," said Kyle Dropp, Morning Consult's co-founder and chief research officer.

"While 81 percent of Republicans say they have a lot or some confidence in Trump's ability to handle those threats, only 18 percent of Democrats say the same."

Here is how the rest of the poll breaks down:

  • 44 percent of voters approve of the job Trump is doing as president, while 52 percent disapprove.
  • 43 percent would say they would favor a Democratic candidate for Congress in their district, while 36 percent say they would back a Republican.
  • 70 percent support stricter gun control laws in the U.S., while 24 percent oppose them.

The poll conducted March 8-12, surveyed 1,997 registered voters. A smaller portion of the poll was taken after word of a possible Trump-Kim meeting and surveyed 1,992 voters. The margin of error for both is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
