A majority of Americans (51 percent) support the U.S. military airstrikes in Syria in response to reports the Syrian government used chemicals weapons on its citizens, but just 34 percent believe it will discourage Syria's use of chemical weapons, according to the latest YouGov poll.

The YouGov poll, as reported by the Huffington Post, provided the following results with respect to support of the airstrikes:

  • Strongly support: 26 percent.
  • Somewhat support: 25 percent.
  • Somewhat oppose: 16 percent.
  • Strongly oppose: 16 percent.
  • Not sure: 17 percent.

In an ensuing question in the survey, respondents were asked: "How likely do you think it is that the airstrikes in Syria will discourage the use of chemical weapons?"

The response was less than confident in the effectiveness of the strikes:

  • Very likely: 9 percent.
  • Smewhat likely: 25 percent.
  • Not very likely: 26 percent.
  • Not at all likely: 19 percent.
  • Not sure: 21 percent.

The YouGov poll surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults April 7-8 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.8 percent.
