Only 15 percent of Russians believe U.S. sanctions against their country are a "critical threat," a poll released Friday shows.

According to the joint survey, conducted in December by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and the Levada Analytical Center, two out of three Russians said they are not concerned about the political and economic sanctions coming from Western countries, reports The Washington Post.

According to the poll's numbers:

  • 68 percent are unconcerned
  • 28 percent are concerned
  • 66 percent were not concerned about Russia's position on Ukraine leaving Russia isolated internationally
  • 29 percent are concerned over the isolation issue
  • 15 percent of the Russian public considers U.S. economic sanctions a critical threat

The United States imposed economic sanctions in 2014 against Russia after it annexed Crimea, and President Donald Trump early in his presidency signed a bill from Congress to impose more sanctions on Russia because of meddling in the 2016 election.

Trump has not yet implemented the sanctions, and has a deadline of Jan. 29 to take action, according to CNN.

The survey was conducted nationally in both Russia and the United States, to determine what people in both countries think of the relations between the two nations and about sanctions.

It also revealed that Americans mostly favor maintaining or increasing sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine and over the election interference issue, with 39 percent wanting the sanctions maintained and 38 percent calling for an increase.

Only 8 percent of Americans wanted the sanctions to decrease, while 11 percent wanted the sanctions to stop altogether.

The survey was conducted in the United States by GfK Custom Research between Dec. 1-3, and included 1,000 American adults, 18 years of age or older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, and carried a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

In Russia, the Levada Center survey was conducted between Dec. 1-5 by the Levada-Center (Levada Analytical Center) among a sample of 1,605 Russian adults in the eight federal districts of the Russian Federation (including Crimea). It carried a margin of error of 3-4 percentage points.
