About two out of three adults say that the upcoming presidential election is a ''significant source of stress'' in their lives in a new survey from the American Psychological Association.

The survey found that 68% of adults say that the presidential election is a significant source of stress, and that tensions are high among members of all political parties.

  • 68% said the election is a significant source of stress.
  • 76% of Democrats said the same.
  • 67% of Republicans said the same.
  • 64% of Independents said the same.

The APA also found that ''While tensions were also high during the last presidential election, the proportion of Americans who say they are stressed about the presidential election has increased dramatically since 2016, when 52% reported this stressor.''

The vast majority of respondents, 77%, also reported that the future of the nation is a significant source of stress, and 71% said that this is ''the lowest point in our nation’s history that I can remember.''

The Harris Poll conducted the survey on behalf of the APA, contacting 3,409 adults across the country from Aug. 4-26. Because the sample is based on those who were invited and agreed to participate in research panels, no estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.
