Slightly more Americans say they're optimistic about the economy rather than pessimistic — and are more optimistic about their own financial situation, a new poll showed.

The CBS News/YouGov survey found that 38% of Americans described themselves as optimistic about the future of the economy compared to 35% who were pessimistic, with 27% were unsure.

For 45%, the job market was their reason for optimism; 37% named the economy and 34% picked trade policy, the poll showed.

A majority, 53%, gave President Donald Trump high marks for his handling of the economy, but 38% said his tweets about the economy or stock market hurt confidence compared with just 25% who said the tweets improve confidence; 37% said the tweets have no effect on their confidence.

In other findings:

  • 54% rate Trump’s handling of trade with China negatively; 46% approve.
  • 54% said Trump makes the economy sound better than it is; 42% think the press makes the economy sound worse than it is, and; 34% believe both Trump and the media describe the economy accurately.
  • 40% said their finances are about the same as two years ago; 29% said they’re better, and 22% said they’re worse.

The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
