A new
Fox Business Network poll puts GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz ahead of rival Donald Trump by 10 points in the upcoming Wisconsin primary election.
In the poll of a random sample of 1,602 Wisconsin voters, including 742 likely Republican voters, showed:
- Cruz, 42 percent;
- Trump, 32 percent;
- Ohio Gov. John Kasich, 19 percent.
The poll, which carried a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points among the Republican voters, mirrored a
Marquette Law School poll earlier this week that also put Cruz at 10 points over Trump in Wisconsin.
The gap widened among those who said they would "definitely vote," between genders, and among "very conservative" voters:
People definitely voting:
- Cruz, 46 percent;
- Trump, 33 percent;
- Kasich, 16 percent;
- Women: Cruz over Trump, 46-27 percent;
- Men: Cruz over Trump, 40-35 percent;
- "Very Conservative" voters: Cruz over Trump, 61-25 percent;
- Evangelical Christians: Cruz over Trump, 49-28 percent;
- People with college degrees: Cruz over Trump, 42-30 percent;
- People with no degree, Cruz over Trump, 44-34 percent;
Independents are able to vote in Wisconsin's open primary, set for April 5, and split 50-50 if they plan to vote Republican or Democrat, and said they were more likely to pick Trump:
- Trump, 37 percent;
- Cruz, 26 percent;
- Kasich, 26 percent.
One in five likely GOP voters said they could change their minds over the next few days, including 40 percent of Kasich supporters, 18 percent who back Cruz, and 15 percent of those who back Trump.
But Kasich's supporters were more than twice as likely to pick Cruz if they change their minds rather than picking Trump.
Many of the voters said they wish Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker had stayed in the race for the White House. If that had happened:
- 44 percent said they'd pick Walker;
- 21 percent, Trump;
- Cruz, 17 percent;
- Kasich, 12 percent.
- 59 percent of Cruz's supporters would back Walker;
- 31 percent of Trump supporters would pick the governor.
