Rep. Pete King: Trump Should Remain Above Twitter Fights

New York GOP Rep. Pete King Tuesday said President Donald Trump should keep himself above political infighting after the president slammed Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand on Twitter earlier in the morning.

"I have a good working with relationship with Kirsten," King told Fox Business' Maria Bartiromo about his fellow New Yorker, a Democrat whose name is already coming up as a potential presidential candidate for 2020.

"We obviously disagree on a number of issues."

However, with Trump getting in such fights, that lends "credence and credibility to people like Gillibrand," said King, and he thinks Trump, as president, should stay above that.

Earlier in the morning, Trump called Gillibrand a "lightweight" and a "total flunky" for Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, and that she "would come to my office begging" for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them).

The slam came after Gillibrand told CNN on Monday that the allegations of sexual misconduct are credible and numerous and that Trump should resign.

Gillibrand also has called for a congressional investigation into the accusations being made against Trump, but King said he would not be on board with that at this stage.

"It is a dangerous path to go down, where we can constantly bring the president into court," he said. "On the other hand, if they do have credible charges to make, I think the president should answer them."

However, should Democrats win control of the House in 2018 and bring impeachment proceedings against Trump, or further investigations, King said that could become a "dangerous precedent."

"That's one of the reasons I voted against impeaching President [Bill] Clinton," said King. "The president can't be tied down in court all the time."
