House Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday that North Korea must show it is committed to reaching a "peaceful resolution," following President Donald Trump's decision to cancel his upcoming summit with North Korea that was due to take place next month.

Ryan said in a statement: "The North Korean regime has long given ample reason to question its commitment to stability. We must continue to work with our allies toward a peaceful resolution, but that will require a much greater degree of seriousness from the Kim regime.

"At the same time, Congress has provided significant tools to hold North Korea accountable, and it is important that the United States not relent in this maximum pressure campaign."

Trump cancelled his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un Thursday morning, saying "it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting," after "the tremendous anger and open hostility displayed" in the country's response to U.S. Vice President Mike Pence suggesting that North Korea could end up like Libya."

North Korea's vice minister of foreign affairs, Choe Son Hui, called Pence "a political dummy" in response to the comment, in a statement issued through The North's official news service, Korean Central News Agency, according to The Wall Street Journal.

She also said, "To borrow their words, we can also make the U.S. taste an appalling tragedy it has neither experienced nor even imagined up to now," and that "before making such reckless threatening remarks without knowing exactly who he is facing, Pence should have seriously considered the terrible consequences of his words."

Choe added: "It is the U.S. who has asked for dialogue, but now it is misleading the public opinion as if we have invited them to sit with us," and that North Korea "will neither beg the U.S. for dialogue nor take the trouble to persuade them if they do not want to sit together with us."
