The Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) has hired House Speaker Paul Ryan's spokesman Zack Roday as its first-ever communications director in a push to bolster its efforts for a large slate of 2018 elections for the influential state position, Politico reported on Monday.

Stakes are high as there will be 31 state attorney general elections nationwide over the next year. The position plays a key consumer protection role, and attorneys general have the ability to derail presidential policy in court. The office also has often been a stepping stone for future senators and governors.

The first such pivotal contest comes next month in Virginia, where RAGA has transferred $1.15 million to nearly double the war chest of Republican John Adams, who is trying to prevent Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring from winning a second term.

"This is another way for us to take the organization's sophistication to another level," RAGA Executive Director Scott Will told Politico. "We have the Virginia attorney general race we're heavily invested in, but beyond that, it's just a really massive election cycle. It's critical for every office, but particularly attorney general — so many states have races and we've seen steady growth in the number of Republican AGs nationally."

Ryan expressed confidence that Roday would make a vital difference in the campaign.

"Zack has been an integral part of Team Ryan for nearly two years," Ryan said in a statement. "He helped me win re-election in Wisconsin and helped House Republicans defend the majority in 2016. The Republican Attorneys General Association is getting a talented and dedicated operative."

The Democratic Attorneys General Association is not standing pat amid the GOP efforts.

It also has increased its fundraising to try to counter the Republicans in what both parties view as crucial elections.

However, as The Sacramento Bee recently reported, the Democrats have only raised $2.9 million in the effort for the first half of the year.

This pales in comparison to the $7.3 million raised by RAGA during the same time period.
