House Speaker Paul Ryan said he opposed the filing of a resolution by some fellow Republican lawmakers calling for special counsel Robert Mueller to step down from the investigation into Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election, telling Fox News on Sunday that Mueller and his team should be allowed to do their job.

"We're not going to interfere with his investigation, the investigation will take its course and we will let it take its course," Ryan said.

The House speaker stressed that he has said this all long and that, “We need to let these career professionals do their jobs, see it through.

"So no, I don't think he should be stepping down and I don’t think he should be fired."

Ryan pointed out that the Congress has its own investigations into the Russian interference in the campaign.

“We need to find out what exactly they did to our country. How and why they did it and then how do we prevent them from doing it in the future,” he said, adding that the probes include looking into the Democratic Party’s funding of a dossier which contained unverified allegations of misconduct and collusion between Donald Trump's campaign and the Russian government during the presidential election.
