House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., defended the GOP's tax plan Thursday and said it will help Americans save money.

According to The Washington Times, Ryan spoke to reporters on Capitol Hill and projected an air of confidence.

"This is not unpopular. We're actually letting people keep more money," Ryan said. "We're going to get this over the finish line."

The GOP's tax plan is facing opposition from Democrats and even some Republicans, partially because it does away with state and local tax deductions. Republicans in high-tax states don't agree with that portion of the bill.

Ryan and others have said the plan would still save Americans money.

"Average households at every income-level see a tax cut," Ryan said.

Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said this week President Donald Trump would not sign any tax bill that increases taxes on the middle class.
