Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said Republicans must do more in the fight against poverty and that his party "hasn't been on the field enough lately."

In an online documentary series called "Comeback" on the website Opportunity Lives, the Wisconsin Republican, with Democratic Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas and other community leaders, points out ways the GOP can improve its stance on poverty.

"Eddie and I have known each other for a long time. We play on different teams, but we've got the same goals and one team, in my case, hasn't been on the field enough lately," Ryan says in the video.

Ryan believes the two parties must cooperate to attack poverty. "What I would love to see is a competition of ideas where we're not just treating symptoms so we can tolerate something more like poverty, but actually breaking the back of poverty, hitting the root causes."

The House speaker noted the difficulty of figuring out solutions.

"What we learned is you can't sit in some ivory tower in any big city and think you've got it all figured out," he said. "Poverty in American isn't going away. We may not read about it in the headlines every day, but it's still persistent across our country and we need to confront it head-on."

The documentary looks at some of Ryan's efforts to fight poverty in America's inner cities, in a six-part series about the fight against poverty in Denver, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

However, his proposals have come under fire.

Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren slammed an anti-poverty plan that Ryan released in June, according to Mother Jones, saying that, "If you look closely, Paul Ryan's new plan is just a shiny repackaging of Paul Ryan's old plan:

"Keep huge tax breaks and special loopholes open for billionaires and giant corporations, gut the rules on Wall Street, then say there's no money for Social Security, for Medicare, for education, or anything else that will help struggling, working families."
