Rep. Paul Ryan plans to take a long bus ride during his coming campaign for Congress, but a recent request by the Ryan campaign to the Federal Election Commission has political watchers wondering whether the bus has scheduled a stop at the White House.
Politico notes that Ryan, 44, a Wisconsin Republican and former vice presidential candidate, asked the Federal Election Commission whether it would be legal for him to buy his own book,
"The Way Forward," and distribute it to political donors as he launches a nationwide bus tour to promote the new publication
— and any candidacies he may be considering.
His book spokesman, Don Meyer, told Politico it was merely "part of a routine process to ensure compliance with campaign law regarding the promotion" of the book, but the request to the FEC noted that the bus tour would not "travel through or stop in Wisconsin," where Ryan will be seeking a Republican primary victory in August against challenger Jeremy Ryan.
The two Ryans are not related, by either blood, politics or campaign cash raised.
The Gazetta Extra noted that Jeremy Ryan didn't file a campaign finance report because, he said, he had not raised the $5,000 that would trigger the requirement for such a report.
Paul Ryan's most likely challenger in the general election, Democrat Rob Zerban, has raised only $100,000.
The Ryan campaign, meanwhile, can afford to buy all the books it wants, according to
Legal Newsline, which notes that Prosperity Action, Ryan's PAC, has raised $1.8 million, spent $2.3 million and still has $375,000 cash on hand. Overall, Ryan has raised $5.3 million and has more than $4 million on hand to battle his opponents.
Ryan's bus tour so far has planned stops in Pensacola, Fla., on Aug. 22, and the Reagan Library in California on Aug. 28.
According to the
request to the FEC, Ryan's book will "delve into the state of the conservative movement in America today, discuss how it contrasts with liberal progressivism and explain what must be done to save what Congressman Ryan refers to as the 'American Idea.'"
"'The Way Forward' will also challenge conventional thinking, renew the conservative vision for 2014 and beyond, and show how that vision is essential for the well-being of our communities and the future of our nation."
