House Speaker Paul Ryan's Republican primary challenger told a columnist to "eat a bullet" in a tweet Wednesday night.

The tweet came after a back and forth on Twitter between conservative candidate Paul Nehlen and New York Post columnist John Podhoretz that began over Nehlen's tweet about a bill on concealed weapons.

Nehlen later tweeted an advertisement for a Dutch food called a "Boston Bullet."

Podhoretz did not respond to request for comment from the Associated Press, but Ryan's spokesman Kevin Seifert described this as the "latest embarrassing controversy that Paul Nehlen has created for himself."

Ryan soundly defeated Nehlen in the 2016 primary, winning 84 percent of the vote.
