One of Paul Manafort's lawyers has met with attorneys for President Donald Trump to brief them on the Russia investigation, according to a new report.
The New York Times reported Tuesday night that Kevin Downing had shared information about the special counsel's investigation of Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman.
Rudy Giuliani, one of Trump's lawyers for Robert Mueller's Russia probe, told the Times the arrangement has helped Giuliani and his colleagues understand where the Mueller investigation is and how deep the former FBI director is going.
Mueller's office found out about the information sharing after it struck a plea deal with Manafort two months ago.
Legal experts cited by the Times said Manafort might be pursuing a presidential pardon. He is currently awaiting sentencing for his first trial, for which he was found guilty of financial crimes, and potentially his second.
In a separate interview, Giuliani said he is advising Trump not to consider pardoning Manafort now, but that the possibility exists to issue one down the road.
