The Justice Department has asked prominent New York City law firm Skadden for documents related to work it did on behalf of the Ukranian government and brokered by Paul Manafort in 2011, The New York Times reported.

Manafort solicited the firm, whose full name is Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, to draft a report that would bolster former Ukranian president Viktor Yanukovych's case for jailing a political rival, the Times reported.

It's all part of the web of connections between Manafort, Ukraine and Russia and how they link to Russia's alleged meddling of the election. Yanukovych was aligned with Russia and eventually fled there, the Times reported.

Manafort did a lot of work on behalf of Yanukovych before being tapped to be campaign chairman of then candidate Donald Trump.

At issue was the jailing and conviction of Yulia Tymoshenko for corruption, charges that were scrutinized and criticized as being politically motivated and without merit, the Times reported.

Skadden's counterpoint report was just one of many brokered by Manafort and used to "confirm the legality of the criminal prosecution" and therefore insulate Yanukovych from being condemned internationally, the Times reported.

By issuing the work that's partisan to Yanukovych, Skadden attracted its own share of scrutiny and criticism, with former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine John Herbst telling the Times that Skadden "should have been ashamed," calling the report "a nasty piece of work."

Tymoshenko spent more than two years in prison — sentenced to seven — where she said she was beaten. Freed in 2014, she has made a return to politics.
