Republicans in Washington State are hot to find a solid challenger to long-serving Democratic Sen. Patty Murray, Roll Call reported.

But with a long list lined up to challenge Gov. Jay Inslee, GOP leaders are finding slim pickings among their ranks for a Senate bid, Roll Call said.

The state's GOP chairwoman, Susan Hutchison, said in an interview with Roll Call that she's had her feelers out to a number of state lawmakers and other possible candidates — "some are elected officials and others are new to campaigns" — but she noted that the governor's race is likely to firm up before a Senate challenger can be had.

"We’ll wait and see what their interests are," Hutchison added.

Among those mentioned as possible candidates are U.S. Reps. Cathy McMorris Rogers and Dave Reichert, who said in a statement that he was keeping his options open, noting that "I have considered every possibility that has been put in front of me," Roll Call said.

Murray's dominance as a force in her party has been front and center since 2010 when she last won re-election. She has been loyal to her constituents, Roll Call noted, flying home each weekend rather than staying in Washington to appear on talk shows. "The watch she wears every day is set to Washington State time," Roll Call said of her devotion.

Murray turned heads last month when she refused to say if she'd make a challenge for her party's leadership against its No. 2, Dick Durbin, Politico said, noting the power swap as New York Sen. Chuck Schumer prepares to take over for the departing Harry Reid.

Politico noted that Murray "was already the most powerful woman in the Senate," but in taking over a No. 2, she'd be the Senate's first female whip.

But the Washington GOP chair, Hutchison, said Murray's 22-year tenure was perhaps too long. "The mom in tennis shoes has a political style that the voters have become weary of," Hutchison told Roll Call.

Murray, who has served since 1993, had $1.9 million campaign cash on hand at the end of last year, FEC records showed.
