The liberal daughter of the late President Ronald Reagan has come out swinging at pro-Donald Trump forces who are urging those who oppose the president-elect to "get over it."
"To everyone who is now telling those of us who are devastated by the reality of a Trump presidency to move on, get over it, stop being negative, aim for unity, etc. I say this respectfully: Back off," Patti Davis wrote Monday on her Facebook page.
"Allow us our grief. Allow us to wrestle with our fears — they are well founded. Do 5 minutes of research on [Trump's new top adviser] Steve Bannon if you don't think there is much to fear.
"Don't trivialize our feelings, don't preach at us, and don't climb on a high horse claiming to have a handle on unity when, in truth, there is no unity in this country and won't be for a very long time.
Davis added that "there is a lot of grace and courage in accepting reality, even if it's a harsh and unpleasant reality. If you want to get to work and try to save this nation, please join in. But stop preaching."
Trump, who identifies with the political ideology of Reagan and used his slogan "Make America Great Again," was criticized by Davis, a longtime liberal, throughout the 2016 presidential race.
In August, she took to Facebook to slam the billionaire real-estate tycoon for comments he made at a North Carolina rally about "Second Amendment people" — which some interpreted as a call for gun owners to attack Hillary Clinton.
"I am the daughter of a man who was shot by someone who got his inspiration from a movie, someone who believed if he killed the president, the actress from that movie would notice him," Davis said, referring to John Hinckley's failed assassination attempt on her father to impress Jodie Foster.
"Your glib and horrifying comment about 'Second Amendment people' was heard around the world. It was heard by sane and decent people who shudder at your fondness for verbal violence."
And last December, Davis remarked that her father would be "so appalled" by the crop of Republican candidates running for president.
Davis, a novelist and biographer, is the younger half-sister of Maureen Reagan and Newsmax contributor Michael Reagan.
