Sen. Pat Toomey admitted Thursday he didn't think Donald Trump would win Tuesday's presidential election.

The Pennsylvania Republican, whose state was the one that clinched the presidency for Trump early Wednesday morning, spoke with Philadelphia's Talk Radio 1210 Thursday about the improbable election result.

"I've got to be totally candid with you: I was not expecting Donald Trump to win," Toomey said. "I didn't anticipate that he would pull this off. I thought it would be close, but I'm still amazed by that."

Toomey would not say for months whether he would support Trump, his party's presidential nominee. He never truly gave public support to the now president-elect, but Toomey told reporters Tuesday he did vote for the real estate mogul.

"It wasn't a dilemma choosing between Trump and Clinton. Clinton was very easy to rule out from day one," Toomey said in Thursday's interview.

"That was never a possibility. I had and I still have a lot of concerns about things that Donald Trump has said, about issues regarding his temperament, about positions."

Toomey served in the House from 1999-2005 before running for the Senate in the 2010 election. On Tuesday, he was victorious in his reelection race against Democrat Katie McGinty.
