Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., is urging his Republican colleagues to use the nuclear option if Democrats block the next appropriations bill.

Toomey's comments came during an interview on "The Hugh Hewitt Show" on Wednesday.

He called it "madness" that Democrats — the minority party — can block "our most fundamental responsibility, which is to spend the taxpayer' money to fund the government."

"And there's absolutely no excuse for it," he said.

"So, my idea is simple. We go down to the floor. And we move to take up the first appropriation bill. And if that is blocked, if the consideration of the bill is blocked, then we should change the rules so that a simple majority is all it takes to move onto an appropriation bill."

President Donald Trump had called on Republicans to go for the nuclear option during the brief government shutdown, USA Today noted.

Most legislation requires 60 votes in the Senate to take up a bill. But by going to the nuclear option, the Senate would need just 51 votes, the newspaper noted.
