The chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee is unhappy with President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

According to The Hill, Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., said the move could harm the agricultural industry.

"Every time you do this, you get a retaliation, and agriculture is the number one target," Roberts said. "I think this is terribly counterproductive for the economy."

When asked why Trump has not listened to lawmakers from agriculture states who have concerns with plans to place tariffs on certain imports, Roberts said "Good question."

Trump made the announcement during a brief media appearance earlier Thursday, saying there will be a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and a 10 percent tariff on aluminum. The tariffs will be implemented starting next week, but Trump would not reveal any further details.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked about the tariff plan during Thursday's daily briefing but would only say that more information would be released next week.

The stock market fell 500 points in the hours after the announcement, with fears of higher prices — and uncertainty about which countries the tariffs would apply to — causing concern.
