George Papadopoulos had claimed last year that Donald Trump had personally called him to talk about his role as foreign policy adviser in the campaign, Politico is reporting.

In addition, Papadopoulos also maintained he was authorized to represent Trump during the campaign in meetings with foreign leaders overseas and had been promised a top job in the White House, according to the website.

His comments were made to two Greek journalists, Marianna Kakaounaki and Alexis Papachelas, Politico said. The two work for the newspaper Kathimerini and interviewed Papadopoulos before and after the election, Politico reported. The journalists provided details to the website.

Papadopoulos reportedly told them that Trump called in March 2016 after he had been tapped for the foreign policy adviser's role in the campaign. Papadopoulos said he had been recommended by Trump's then-political rival Ben Carson,

Papadopoulos' claims go against assertions by Trump and administration officials that he was a small player in the campaign, according to Politico. Trump has maintained "few people" in the campaign knew him.

Still, Politico noted one person close to Papadopoulos insisted the claims about personal interactions with Trump were false. And even the two Greek journalists are skeptical of his claims, the website reported.

In one text message sent to the journalists, Papadopoulos reportedly wrote of Trump: "Everyone knows I helped him (get) elected, now I want to help him with the presidency."

Papadopoulos already has pleaded guilty to lying to federal agents as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russia's meddling in the presidential campaign, according to The New York Times.

The newspaper said he has been cooperating with the investigation.

Meanwhile, the House Intelligence Committee is interested in the Greek newspaper's interviews with Papadopoulos, Politico noted.

"Obviously, the committee is interested in the role that Papadopoulos played in the campaign, especially given the way that the White House has downplayed his role," one committee source told Politico.

"We certainly want to know about any meetings he had with senior campaign officials, including the president, about his travel abroad, and about any meetings he took part in with foreign counterparts or government officials."
