The curious case of the race for Pennsylvania’s 9th Congressional District.

The race for president is not the only one in this country that is peculiar this year.

Incumbent Republican Rep. Bill Shuster is seeking his eighth two-year term in the House; he is facing for the third time Art Halvorson, a strident Tea Party Republican, only this time he is not challenging Shuster in another primary contest, instead he is running as a Democrat.

There is also a third person running Adam Sedlock, the real Democrat, who is backed by the state Democratic Party and running via a write-in campaign.

Halvorson has lost to Shuster in two primaries in a row, this past spring in the Pennsylvania primary he ran and lost to Shuster once again, but won a write-in campaign as a Democrat over the real Democratic candidate.

He says though he wants to be a Tea Party type conservative representative in the mold of the Freedom Caucus Republicans once he is elected to the House.

Since this summer Halvorson has ceaselessly attacked Shuster as a Washington insider, taken shots at his personal life, as well as his father Bud’s personal life who held the seat before him.

Then it gets even odder.

Late last month Pennsylvania State Police filed a summary charge of harassment against Halverson after examining a volunteer for the Shuster’s campaign’s complaint that Halvorson grasped and held onto her wrist at a local county fair.

Halvorson has denied it ever happened.

The 9th Congressional District is the very heart of Southwestern Pennsylvania and also the very heart of Donald J. Trump’s most strident support. The district includes most or part of 12 counties.

Shuster has been a strong supporter for Trump since the evening he won the state’s April primary overwhelmingly.

Shuster is chair of the House transportation committee and the only member of the state’s delegation in leadership, he was first elected to Congress in 2001.

Halvorson, who is running like his nemesis rather than a political rival is a commercial real estate developer and Sedlock is a psychologist.
