The latest fervor over a potential presidential run by Oprah Winfrey puts the spotlight on the crowded field of anti-Donald Trump billionaires mulling a run at the White House in 2020, Politico reports.

The "will she or won't she" had been percolating quietly until Oprah's Golden Globes speech Sunday night, not unlike a handful of other billionaires who have dipped their toes in the waters to varying degrees since President Donald Trump was elected:

  • Liberal Tom Steyer: Leader of the impeach Trump movement, who has announced a $30 million pledge to help get Democrats elected in the 2018 midterms.
  • Mark Cuban: NBA owner and cable TV reality star who has grabbed many headlines about his interest and intentions.
  • Starbucks head honcho Howard Schultz.
  • Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
  • Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg.

The only real common link between them is an ability to self-fund a presidential run and a certain amount of hubris to think that because Trump did it, they might be able to do it, too.

"This is really a pipe dream," GOP pollster Robert Blizzard told Politico. "You've always seen a little bit of this in statewide races, that people think just because they were successful in business they can do it in politics. But Trump is the exception, not the rule."

"It's a symptom of the cancer of the big money in politics: People think just because they have a lot of money, they think they can run for office," Larry Cohen, part of Sen. Bernie Sanders' political machine, told Politico.
