Ohio’s GOP Gov. Mike DeWine on Sunday predicted a “close” win for President Donald Trump in the state, citing the campaign’s better “ground game” than that of challenger Joe Biden.
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” DeWine said, however, “it’s not going to be a blowout” like it was in 2016.
“I think the president wins Ohio. I think it's going to be a close vote,” he said.
“We are in the midst of a pandemic and this is a tough, tough time. And so, you know, it's going to be closer…. But the president still is going to do exceedingly well in what historically has been a Democrat area, the Ohio valley, eastern Ohio. All the reports from over there are that he is going to do exceedingly well there. All the other rural counties he is going to do exceedingly well.
“The ground game, the best I could see it on both sides, I think the president's ground game has been a lot better than the Biden.”
DeWine, who’s state is battling a coronavirus increase, made an urgent plea for the nation to come together after the election — no matter who wins — to beat “the common enemy” — COVID-19.
“When we wake up on Wednesday, whoever wins this race we got to come together,” he said. “This virus doesn't care whether we vote for Joe Biden or whether we vote for Donald Trump. It's coming after us, and, you know we need to push aside these differences. We have a lot more in common with each other.”
“We've done it in the past. We've rallied before,” he added. “This is like a war. We always come together. We put our differences aside. Our political squabbling. … on Wednesday we have to come together as a country because we have to fight this enemy and we have to defeat this enemy.”
