Aides to President Donald Trump are becoming frustrated his own actions have led to a reported investigation of him for obstruction of justice, The Daily Beast reported.

The Washington Post report of the probe of the president himself follows the Trump floating the possibility of firing the new head of the investigation, Robert Mueller, the Justice Department special counsel appointed after the firing of FBI Director James Comey.

His aides talked him out of it, The New York Times reported.

"We are all advising him not to [get rid of] Muellerl; that has not changed," one Trump aide told The Daily Beast. "It would be an absolute nuclear explosion if he did."

According to The Daily Beast, Trump officials are focused on limiting fallout from reaction from the president to the report he is personally the target of a probe.

"The president did this to himself," one Trump official told The Daily Beast.

The Daily Beast reported a second senior administration official pointed to Trump's role in propagating the rumor he might fire Mueller, suggesting the leak to the Post on Wednesday might have been an unintended consequence of that move.

"Whoever leaked [news of the obstruction investigation] was obviously reading that he was thinking about giving Mueller the boot," the official told The Daily Beast.

Trump "shot himself in the foot again with this cockamamie scheme to get Mueller to play ball."
