States Up Against Deadlines to Enact Obamacare

Friday, 29 June 2012 10:30 AM EDT

States are now facing a set of crucial deadlines to enact provisions of Obamacare and at least one governor is refusing to comply hoping the GOP will prevail in the fall and stop the law. The law, upheld by the Supreme Court, says states have until January 1 to prove that state insurance exchanges will be operational in 2014, The New York Times reported.

If they don’t, the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services has the authority to step in and establish and operate the exchanges. Gov. Scott Walker, R-Wisc., has said he will continue to delay enacting provisions of the law on the hope that Republicans will make gains in November and then undo the law, the Times reported

“Wisconsin will not take any action to implement Obamacare,” Walker said in a statement. “I am hopeful that political changes in Washington, D.C., later this year ultimately end the implementation of this law at the federal level.”

So far, only 10 states and the District of Columbia have passed laws to set up the insurance exchanges and insurance executives and hospital executives tell the Times that meeting the law’s deadlines will be challenging.

“It’s going to be a significant lift to be done in all 50 states,” Mark Bertolini, the chief executive of Aetna, told the paper.
