President Donald Trump is better at managing Obamacare than President Barack Obama was, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said.
His comments came in a speech to healthcare leaders in Nashville, Tennessee, where he highlighted the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare. according to USA Today.
Azar, noting that Obamacare premiums are expected to dip two percent nationally next year, credited Trump with improving the insurance marketplace. He also said the total number of insurers on the federal exchange will grow for the first time in four years.
“It turns out, when you have a president who’s willing to take decisive action, who understands business, who’s willing to work with the private sector, you can find a way to help American patients, even within a failed system like the ACA," he said. “The president who is supposedly trying to sabotage the Affordable Care Act has proven better at managing it than the president who wrote the law.”
Azar was critical of Obama’s management of the healthcare program.
“The previous administration's major healthcare achievement, the Affordable Care Act, was an attempt to use more government regulation and intervention to improve American healthcare,” Azar said. “As we all know, the results were a disaster with skyrocketing costs and disappearing choices.”
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has issued new guidance that makes it easier for Americans to opt out of having health insurance this year and not be penalized via the individual mandate.
