Former President Barack Obama should have kept with the actions of previous former presidents and not commented on President Donald Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday.
"I think President Obama should have kept his mouth shut," McConnell told Lara Trump during an online campaign event. "You know, we know he doesn't like much this administration is doing, that's understandable. But I think it's a little bit classless frankly to critique an administration that comes after you."
He noted that former President George W. Bush was noted for not commenting on Obama's actions in the White House.
"You had your shot, you were there for eight years. I think the tradition that the Bushes set up of not critiquing the president who comes after you, is a good tradition," McConnell said.
McConnell didn't say what comments by Obama he was referring to, nor did Lara Trump, the president's daughter-in-law. But Obama was reported over the weekend to have called Trump's handling of the coronavirus an "absolute chaotic disaster" during a phone call with former staffers.
